Some Easy Strategies to Manage the Symptoms of Allergies in Autumn . . . .

Avoid Autumn Allergies?

Autumn is a wonderful season to enjoy to fullness of the changing weather with woodland walks, weekend retreats, and an abundance of harvest produce. Unfortunately, while the new season brings many joys, it also can welcome unwanted allergies. There are many simple ways to get ahead of these allergy attacks.

~~~ What causes Autumnal allergies?

Allergies are not only bothersome in the Spring, the changing seasons can also bring irritating allergens. Even the falling leaves provide a place for mold to grow as many other plants lose their foliage and release pollen into the air at the same time. The specific pollen of ragweed triggers allergies in roughly 23 million people globally from the months of August to November.  You too could be affected by allergies in your area.

~~~ How do you know if you experience Autumn allergies?

From a runny nose to an itchy throat and rashes, allergies make themselves known in a variety of unpleasant ways. The variation of allergy symptoms depends on the body part that is exposed.  Those who experience watery, itchy eyes, or a running nose are having allergy symptoms due to exposure from allergens on the face. Whereas, asthma and wheezing can be triggered from breathing in allergens from the air around you. In the process, itchy throats, and an upset stomach are side effects of allergens entering the mouth. Lastly, hives, dry itchy skin, and eczema flareups are all signs of allergies specifically in contact with the skin.

~~~ What can I do to help my allergies?

·         Pollen Prevention- To start the day, check the pollen levels at home. Do this all year round, not just in summer months. If you notice the levels are high in your area, limit your outdoor time. The mornings are the worst time for allergy flareups. Instead of daytime walks, go for a night or evening stroll if you simply must be outside.   

·         Protect Yourself- When leaving the house, prevent pollen from having contact with you by wearing clothing to cover your skin and face. Trousers, hats, sunglasses, long sleeves, and scarfs are all great choices to protect yourself from these allergens.  

·         Prep your Home- Make sure no pollens enter your home by not bringing them inside. When you enter your home, immediately change from outdoor clothes and wash the possible pollen off your hair and skin. These preventative steps will help stop allergens from spreading inside your home.  

·         Say Goodbye to Airdry- Avoid hanging your laundry outside to dry for the same reasons of removing the pollens from your clothes and skin before relaxing inside. Airborne pollens will attach to your air-drying laundry and bring allergens into the home. Stick with the indoor drying rack or electric dryer for this time of year.

·         Call the Doc- Some allergy seasons are harsher than others. If you find that your allergies are not manageable this Autumn season, a professional will be able to give you an allergy test to identify what exactly is causing your symptoms. There are solutions no matter how bad your allergies tend to be.
